MidJourney AI launches V1: a new tool to convert images into short videos

What is MidJourney V1?

MidJourney, a popular AI company based in San Francisco, has launched its first video generation tool, called V1. This new feature allows users to convert images into short animated videos using AI.

What can you do with V1?

With V1, users can:

  • Turn any image into a 5-second video clip
  • Upload your own image or use an image generated by MidJourney
  • Just click the "Animate" button to get started
  • Get 4 versions of a 5-second video (each can be extended to 20 seconds)

NOTE: MidJourney has not confirmed if these videos will include sound

 Animation Modes: Automatic vs. Manual

You can create animations in two ways:

1. Automatic Mode

  • AI suggests how the image should move
  • Best for users who want quick results

2. Manual Mode

  • You write specific cues to control how the image moves and how the scene evolves
  • Good for creative users who want more control

 Camera Style Options

  • You can choose how the “camera” behaves in the video:
  • Low Speed: Still camera with minimal movement
  • High Speed: Active camera and subject movement throughout the videos

Who can use it and what does it cost?

  • Midjourney has made V1 available to all users, including those with the free plan. However, there are a few things to know:

GPU Usage:

  • Video creation uses 8x more GPU than images
  • According to Midjourney, video creation costs more, but it's still cheaper than other similar tools

Access Modes:

  • Fast Mode:
  • Uses limited GPU time (free + paid users get some every month)
  • 1 minute = image | 8 minutes = video
  • Once used, you can't generate more content until the next cycle
  • Relaxed Mode (only for Pro users and above):
  • Unlimited usage, but slower
  • Prompts wait in queue (up to 10 minutes)

 What the CEO says

Midjourney CEO David Holz said:

The future of this technology is real-time, AI-generated, open-world simulations... Imagine AI creating live visuals as you move."
